MBBS Eligibility 2026 — Quick Check
Class 12 PCB • Age 17+ • NEET-UG qualified
Quick Answer

MBBS eligibility India 2026: Class 12 with PCB (Physics, Chemistry, Biology), minimum 50% aggregate (General/EWS) or 40% (SC/ST/OBC), minimum age 17 years as on 31 Dec 2026, and a valid NEET-UG qualifying percentile. There is no upper age limit and no cap on NEET attempts.

Basic Eligibility Requirements for MBBS in India 2026

1. Educational Qualification

You must have passed Class 12 (10+2) from a recognised board with Physics, Chemistry, and Biology / Biotechnology as main subjects, plus English as a language subject. The minimum aggregate is calculated only on PCB — English marks do not count toward the cut-off.

CategoryMinimum PCB Aggregate
General / EWS50%
OBC (Non-Creamy Layer)40%
SC / ST40%
PwD (General)45%
PwD (SC/ST/OBC)40%

2. Age Criteria

Minimum age: 17 years as on 31 December of the admission year. For 2026 admission this means born on or before 31 December 2009. There is no upper age limit — the Supreme Court struck down the earlier 25-year cap, so candidates of any age beyond 17 are free to appear.

Note: While there is no age cap, some state quotas (especially state government colleges) may verify age proof and domicile certificates strictly. Keep your matric certificate handy as the official date of birth proof.

3. NEET-UG Qualification

NEET-UG is compulsory for every MBBS admission in India — government, private, deemed and AIIMS. Without NEET, no medical seat can be allotted. The minimum qualifying percentile (different from the merit cut-off) is shown below:

CategoryMinimum PercentileApprox. Score / 720
General / EWS50th percentile138+ marks
OBC / SC / ST40th percentile107+ marks
PwD (General)45th percentile122+ marks
PwD (Reserved)40th percentile107+ marks

Nationality & NRI / OCI Eligibility

Indian nationals, NRIs, OCIs, PIOs and foreign nationals are all eligible for MBBS admission in India. The same Class 12 PCB and NEET-UG qualifying criteria apply.

No Limit on NEET Attempts

As of 2026, there is no limit on the number of NEET attempts. Earlier rules restricting attempts to 3 have been removed. You can appear every year until you qualify and secure admission, provided you meet the minimum age and Class 12 PCB requirements.

Eligibility for BAMS, BDS, BHMS, BUMS — The Same Rules

All NEET-based UG medical courses share the same eligibility criteria as MBBS — PCB aggregate, age, NEET-UG qualifying percentile and English subject requirement. The difference is only in the cut-off rank required during counselling. So if you qualify NEET-UG, you are simultaneously eligible for:

Quick Eligibility Checklist

Common Eligibility Mistakes Students Make

  1. Forgetting English as a language subject — many state boards make it optional in Class 12, but NMC requires it. Without English, your application can be rejected at counselling.
  2. Counting PCM marks for eligibility — only PCB matters. Biology must be one of your Class 12 main subjects.
  3. Assuming improvement exam fees are paid — if you took a compartment or improvement exam, ensure the final mark sheet is issued before the counselling deadline.
  4. Skipping domicile certificate — state quota seats need it. Apply for one as soon as you finish Class 12.
  5. Misreading the NRI quota rules — NRIs still need to qualify NEET-UG. NRI seats are not NEET-exempt.

Frequently Asked Questions on MBBS Eligibility

Can I apply for MBBS if I failed one subject in Class 12?
No. You must have passed Class 12 with PCB. If you failed any of these core subjects, appear for the compartment exam and pass before applying for MBBS or NEET-UG.
What if my PCB aggregate is exactly 50%?
50% meets the NMC and NEET-UG eligibility standard for General/EWS category — you are eligible. SC/ST/OBC needs 40%, EWS 50%, PwD General 45%.
Is there an age limit for NEET 2026?
Minimum age is 17 years as of 31 December 2026. Following the 2022 Supreme Court ruling, there is currently no maximum age limit for NEET-UG.
Can I do MBBS in India without Biology in Class 12?
No. Biology (or Biotechnology) is a compulsory subject for MBBS eligibility. PCM students without Biology are not eligible for NEET-UG.
I am an NRI — am I eligible for MBBS in India?
Yes. NRIs, OCIs and PIOs are eligible and can apply under NRI quota in private and deemed colleges. The same Class 12 PCB and NEET-UG criteria apply.
Is eligibility the same for BAMS, BDS, BHMS as MBBS?
Yes. All NEET-based UG medical courses share the same eligibility. Cut-off ranks differ across courses but the academic and age criteria are identical.
How many NEET attempts are allowed in 2026?
No attempt limit. You can appear every year until you qualify and secure admission, as long as you meet age and Class 12 PCB requirements.
What is the NEET qualifying percentile for MBBS 2026?
50th percentile for General/EWS (~138+ marks), 40th percentile for SC/ST/OBC (~107+ marks), 45th percentile for PwD General (~122+ marks). Merit cut-offs for actual admission are far higher.
