What is NEET Counselling?

NEET counselling is the process by which medical seats in government and private colleges are allotted to qualified NEET candidates. In Karnataka, this is managed by KEA (Karnataka Examinations Authority) for state quota seats and MCC for AIQ seats.

Types of Counselling in Karnataka

1. AIQ (All India Quota) — 15% of government college seats, managed by MCC. Students from all over India can apply.

2. State Quota (85%) — Managed by KEA. Karnataka domicile students are eligible. Includes Government seats, Payment seats, and CET quota in private colleges.

3. Management Quota — 15% seats in private colleges filled by the college management at higher fees.

MBBS Admission Details & Seat Matrix

In Karnataka, there are around 11,000 MBBS seats distributed across 70+ government and private medical colleges. The competition for these seats is intense, making it crucial to understand the breakdown:

  • Government Seats: Highly subsidized fees. Requires top NEET scores (typically 600+ for general category).
  • Private Seats (Govt. Quota): Available in private colleges through KEA. Fees are around Rs. 1.4 Lakhs/year.
  • Private Seats (Management Quota): Also filled through KEA counselling. These seats cost between Rs. 10 to 25 Lakhs/year. Since fees are higher, the cutoff score drops, often available to students scoring 200-450.
  • NRI / Others Quota: Dedicated 15% seats in private colleges. Fees range from Rs. 20 to 45 Lakhs/year. Open to all qualifying NEET candidates regardless of domicile.

Why Pursue MBBS in Karnataka?

Karnataka is known as the medical hub of India. Colleges like Bangalore Medical College (BMCRI), MS Ramaiah, and St. John's offer world-class infrastructure, extensive clinical exposure due to high patient inflow, and highly experienced faculty. Furthermore, the state boasts a robust healthcare ecosystem, providing excellent internship and post-graduation (PG) opportunities.

KEA Counselling Step-by-Step Process (2025 Updates)

All candidates, including non-Karnataka students applying for management/NRI quota, must register on the official KEA portal (cetonline.karnataka.gov.in/kea/). The standard process includes:

  1. Online Registration: Opens shortly after NEET UG results are declared.
  2. Document Verification: Often conducted offline at KEA nodal centers. Non-Karnataka candidates typically verify documents in Bangalore.
  3. Choice Filling & Locking: Candidates enter their preferred colleges. The priority order is absolutely critical here.
  4. Mock Allotment & Final Allotment: KEA releases a mock list, allowing candidates to change options before the real seat allotment.
  5. Reporting: Download the admission order and report to the allotted college with original documents and fee DD.
